Mother-of-pearl is used to adorn various objects. The items that were splendidly decorated by the Thai mother-of-pearl inlay process are called “Khr-uang Muk” by the Thais. Thais process requires plenty of time, artistic talent and skilled craftsmanship, therefore mother-of-pearl inlaid objects are recognized as highly-valued items. They are also the pride of many owners.
The seashell popularly used in the mother-of-pearl work is called “Muk Fai”, flame snail, which is luminous. Apart from seashells, other major materials used in this painstaking process include black lacquer, Samuk, the ashes of burnt deer’s horns and fired clay powder.
